Tuning the Music Therapist

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

Music so strongly evokes emotional responses that it is being more frequently employed in the context of psychotherapy as a powerful healing modality. As a novice in this field I inquired at a recent conference on music therapy as to how this tool effects healing in clients with emotional disorders.

Conceptually, it is my understanding that the music therapist often employs musical improvisation to communicate with the unconscious aspects of the patient’s psyche. The therapist may set out to convey an empathic or supportive intention with the use of a musical language that communicates at an emotional rather than verbal level. The intention of the therapist may be completely informed by what she/he “thinks” the patient needs for his/her healing i.e. a unidirectional healing intention. Alternately, it may be more dynamically informed.

In the latter case, the therapist’s intention is informed dynamically through her/his empathic attunement to the patient’s emotional state as the musical dialogue unfolds. In such a case the emotional quality of the music may evolve as the therapist and patient interact through the musical medium.

Ideally in a genuine healing situation it is expected that the therapist will evoke in the patient an emotional state that brings with it greater internal harmony associated with such feelings as relaxation, peace, joyfulness, contentment, and a sense of light heartedness. This feeling of harmony, from an energy psychology paradigm, is associated with an ordered and sustaining bio-field of energy that supports both structure and function of the body at all levels.

Metaphorically, the therapist could be seen to be helping the patient “tune” him/her self to an optimal bio-energetic field of frequencies that then spontaneously effect healing. To say that the therapist is directly doing the healing would be difficult to justify as the therapist couldn’t possibly know how to direct the multitude of biochemical reactions necessary for healing to occur. She/he however may be facilitating the re-establishment of a healing bio-energetic field within and around the patient that itself orchestrates the biochemical re-organization.

If we extend the use of this metaphor, the therapist could be considered as a tuning device, similar to that required to tune a musical instrument. Hence we can speak of the therapist as the tuner for the patient’s bio-energy field.

It becomes obvious then that if a tuning device is itself out of tune the musical instrument to be tuned will be out of key, no matter how well the musician’s technique.

In the same way, if the music therapist who is helping to facilitate a realignment of the patient’s bio-energy field is “out of tune” this will not only limit the healing process but could also potentially be harmful for the patient. It becomes imperative then that the music therapist, apart from being a skilled musician, also undergoes an internal bio-energetic realignment or retuning.

What will the therapist use as a tuning device however? In order to answer this question we must reflect on what it means to be in tune. As we alluded to earlier, when the patient is in harmony he/she feels relaxed, peaceful, joyful, contented, and lighthearted. We also notice that in such a state, stress is reduced and physical and emotional resilience is enhanced. This is clearly a state in which healing is optimally supported and might therefore be accepted as a state of optimal tuning of the bio-energetic field.

Unfortunately, music alone cannot effect such an optimal state of tuning. If it could we wouldn’t need the presence of the music therapist in the therapeutic situation. Hence, in the same way the music therapist cannot rely on music alone for the realignment of their own bio-energetic field. We are therefore left with a slight conundrum. In order to address this it becomes necessary to ask: where does the internal source of harmony that is represented by the feeling state mentioned above, originate within an individual.

We note that his feeling state of harmony can be rapidly evoked when one actively appreciates something they like about themselves. Through the action of self appreciation one can spontaneously begin to feel joyful, relaxed, peaceful, contented and lighthearted, among other feelings. These feelings are also felt most intensely over the region of the person’s heart.

Since it is the person themselves that is actively doing the appreciating the feelings of appreciation are clearly emerging from that person’s Self. As the feelings of appreciation are most intensely felt over the heart region, then it follows that that person’s experience of themselves originates in the heart region. Ironically, most individuals however tend to “think” of themselves as originating in the mind or brain. In other words they think they are somewhere where they are not. Their heart, i.e. their Self, is left forgotten and abandoned.

The mind and the beliefs that flow through it become the organizing bio-energy field that then tries to sustain the body in its daily functioning. However, because the mind is not the Self it does not have the necessary information to adequately sustain the physical/emotional body. This is obvious because none of us is capable of consciously knowing how to orchestrate the multitude of biochemical processes in our bodies. In most cases we are not even aware of what they are.

As a result the individual does not feel in a state of harmony i.e. they feel stressed. It is only when the heart is re-instated as the center of that individual that harmony is re-established.

The re-instatement of the heart as the center of a person however is not easily accomplished. The reason for this is that there are many beliefs in the mind/brain that lead the individual to fear or mistrust the heart’s motives or capability in supporting the individual. Ironically such beliefs then keep the person in a state of disharmony.

The extent to which a music therapist, or any therapist for that matter, is ruled by such beliefs renders her/him unable to effect a true state of internal harmony and optimal tuning in the patient. Such beliefs are often deeply conditioned in the therapist, held at an unconscious level and effectively convey a disharmony in the music that they produce in the therapeutic situation.

By clearing these conditioned beliefs it is possible for the therapist to tune themselves to their own inner harmony thereby allowing them to improvise a form of “pure musical harmony” in the therapeutic setting that helps the patient optimally tune into their own internal harmony. The permanent clearing of such conditioning from one’s bio-energetic field has recently become possible through a new tool called the Mind Resonance Process

Instant Healing with Magic Eraser Technique

Monday, July 28th, 2008

All of us make mistakes. That’s part of a learning process and learning is a life-long experience. As long as we live and breathe, we are bound to keep on learning something new and we are likely to make some mistakes along the way. Mistakes are not so much of a problem in themselves. They become a problem when we hold onto them, when we get fixated onto them, when we become attached to them as if they were great treasures, until they become so deeply embedded in our minds, emotions, and bodies that they prevent us from fully enjoying the present moment.

Perhaps you can think of some experiences in your life that you wish never happened - experiences from the past to which you still feel in some way mentally and emotionally attached, and even though they may be long gone, they are unsettling you or even causing you some pain when you think about them. The pain may be mental, emotional or physical (it may have even expressed in a form of physical illness). It’s nice to know that you have the power to erase it - from your mind, emotions and body, from your energy field as a matter of fact, as if it never happened, allowing you to more fully enjoy the present moment.

The technique which I like to call “it never happened” or “magic eraser” is the essence of all spiritual practices and plays a major role in shamanic and esoteric practices. Sometimes it is labeled as the “practice of forgiveness”, sometimes as the “practice of emptiness”. After all it’s much easier to build something new, something you would desire to experience now, starting with a clean slate, than upon undesirable leftovers from the past.

There are varying degrees to the practice of this technique. They depend upon your purpose for using this technique, upon your perception of the world and therefore upon what you may feel is safe for you to let go of.

At the very basic level of application, what you are doing is letting go of emotional attachment to some specific experience, which seems to be the source of greatest pain and obstacle in your life. Some of the applications may deal with healing some pain from broken relationships, or from any other kind of loss, getting rid of addictions, and even recovering completely from illnesses which are believed to be “incurable”. “It never happened” technique is the essence of “instant healing”.

On a higher spiritual level of practice, for example, you would practice letting go of emotional attachment to everything that is “manifested”, everything that is not the “Source” itself. The feeling of safety in letting go of everything in the material world comes from being aware (experientially, not just intellectually) of the Source and shifting your sense of identity from your physical body to your spiritual self, to the Source itself.

Forgiveness is not about encouraging or condoning hurtful behavior, nor is it about shoving it under the carpet and forgetting about it. Forgiveness is about letting go of the emotional attachment to the situation, behavior or person that has caused you pain. If something or someone is causing you repeated pain and you don’t know how to deal with the specific situation, you may completely remove yourself from it. Forgiveness is not about letting yourself getting hurt over and over again. It is about letting go of the ties that bind you to the past, about freeing the energy that is stuck in the past, so that you can more fully enjoy your life now.

And in the same way, “it never happened” technique is not about shoving unresolved issues under the carpet. It is about resolving them. It is about clearing them, washing them away, dissolving them into nothingness, so that you can use the freed energy to build the life you would enjoy living now. The resolution is ultimately about liberating your emotional energy.

If you just attempt to forget about the painful event, to hide it from your awareness, to shove it deep inside you where you won’t be aware of the pain it’s causing you, sooner or later it will seek to be expressed in some way - and one of the most likely ways may be through some form of physical illness. That’s why when people suffer from some chronic health problems, the moment they let go of past hurts and resentments, they often experience spontaneous recovery. It is useful to know that any hurtful feelings you hold onto are not doing damage to anyone else as much as they are dragging you down. That’s why it’s important to let them go.

You may have learned from your past experiences what you like to experience in life, what you would rather do without, what makes you feel more alive, what drains your energy, who and what contributes to your sense of well-being and happiness and who doesn’t and you can arrange your present life in accord with all that which you believe contributes to your greatest sense of well-being. And as you do, you can just let go of your emotional attachment to everything and everyone that doesn’t contribute to your sense of well-being. Fill your mind and heart, and surround yourself as much as possible with that which makes you feel good, and let go of the past.

The ways of practicing “it never happened” technique are as varied as your imagination may allow. You may imagine a brilliant white light or a violet fire blazing through the situation you desire to dissolve. White or violet light will dissolve all dis-harmonies from the situation, leaving only that which is lovely, beautiful and harmonious. You can use them to heal any condition. You will know when you are done because your feelings toward that situation will change, the pain will be gone, sometimes even within just a few minutes of practice.

You can also imagine having a “magic eraser” and erasing the problem - this has worked well for some people working with addictions.

You can scan your body, by moving your awareness through your body from the top of your head all the way down to your feet and noticing any tense areas where blocked energy may be and imagine them dissolving into nothingness. You may also just breathe through those parts of your body, until the tension (or the pain) is gone.

This technique is sometimes used with physical injuries due to accidents in a way that you repeat the motions that lead to the injury, but with an alternative - desired ending. For example, if you accidentally cut your finger with a knife while chopping vegetables, you may repeat the motion with the knife, but where it was intended to go in the first place, without touching your finger. This will re-imprint the event in your subconscious mind and may instantly stop bleeding.

If you desire to change some life-long condition, you can go back in your memory all the way to the time before that condition happened for the first time (even to the time of your birth or before) and re-live your entire life in your mind as if that condition never existed in your life. You can at the same time replace it with desired experience and re-live your life as if you had the desired condition throughout your life. You should repeat this process as many times as necessary until the desired condition has been firmly impressed upon your subconscious mind and the effect is obvious in your outer experience.

For example, if you are using this technique for healing of “incurable” illness, you should keep repeating it for half-an hour, few times a day, every day, until the problem is gone. If you really get wholeheartedly involved in this process, you should notice visible improvement after each half-an-hour session.

Remember that the secret of the rapid success with self-hypnosis is in your willingness and ability to experience your desired condition as if it were real for you now, in your inner world, in your subjective experience. Your outer experience merely reflects your subjective experience.

Chakra Meditation for Healing - Instruction for Clearing, Balancing & Charging Your 7 Major Chakras

Friday, July 25th, 2008

1. I will guide you through a visualization of your chakras with a brief explanation for each.

2. Followed by a Mantra or Affirmation you will first recite aloud then silently within.

3. After which you will be instructed to tone a seed syllable in a keynote of the C-Major scale that corresponds with your chakra.

4. For 4 minutes you will focus on clearing and balancing a chakra, allowing any images to surface and melt away as energy blockages are cleared and balance restored in your chakra.

5. For 1 minute I will guide you to conclude your journey by visualizing your chakra as a clear and vibrant whirling ball of pulsing energy.

The Mantras and Seed Syllables you will be instructed to use are therapeutic tools for improving all your sensory perceptions. Attunement and alignment through sounding of a Seed Syllable has been practiced for thousands of years to promote healing and regeneration, as well as to transform negative emotional patterns.

The repetition and vocalization of a Seed Syllable creates a vibration within your body which shakes cells free from their habitual grooves to restore your biological rhythms. Sounding these Seed Syllables will literally entrain your body to the rhythms of the universe.

The attunement and alignment generated within yourself stimulates the release of powerful chemical messengers within your body which results in the correction of disruptive emotional patterns related to each of the Chakras. Your primordial sense of peace and unity within yourself and with others will be restored.

As well the breathing exercises are a powerful antioxidant stimulus as they increase oxygen to your cells for enhanced nutrition and removal of metabolic waste materials and toxic residue.

As you become adept at working with your chakras you may gradually increase the time you focus your attention on each energy center. Initially your focus should be for no more than five minutes duration.

A regular practice of these exercises will result in an increased amplitude for each of your Major Chakras and give you the necessary stamina to dispel life obstacles. Increased amplitude of your energy centers will greatly enhance your vital life force and positively impact your health and longevity.

Your regular practice of these guided visualization and affirmation exercises is a conscious investment you can choose to make in building your personal power which will enable you to direct your spirit.

My Guide to Healing Your Rainbow Bridge includes the related physical, mental and emotional imbalances that result from stagnation or energy blockage for each Chakra.
